Not much I can say about this song that hasn’t already been said really is there?..

EXCEPT…

The Byrds didn’t actually play on the studio version just added vocals and Roger McGuinn’s guitar parts… Everything else was put down by session musicians ‘The Wrecking Crew’ … For more on the subject listen to our interview with Denny Tedesco, Son of Wrecking Crew Member Denny on Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM at the following link…

Denny Tedesco is Director of the documentary about The Wrecking Crew and it’s a mind-blowing insight into 60’s, Californian, recording studios and many famous songs you always thought were recorded by someone else!

What is also interesting about this footage from the Frankie Avalon hosted TV show ’Shivaree' is it is only The Byrds second ever TV appearance, Gene Clark oddly enough sports a twelve string Fender instead of his usual tambourine; odd inasmuch as they are miming to a backing track and conceptually surely it would have been more appropriate bearing in mind it's 'Mr Tambourine Man’? On this occasion the vocals however are completely live although David Crosby and Gene's vocal mics are not in the mix until the second chorus.

There’s also a spine-tingling moment when Gene Clark’s enigmatic baritone kicks in on the second chorus with 'In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you'.

It’s of further interest to note that Gene’s vocal part was NOT on the actual record as he was on the same track as Wrecking Crew musician Leon Russell's electric piano, which was eventually left out of the final mix.
