Halloween DJ gig plus Mike Nesmith on our radio show.

Ok Folks,
tonight from 9 til 1am we will be spinning some horror classics at Aces and Eights in Tufnell Park… We are extremely excited as it’s our first time on the decks at this fine, Rock ’n’ Roll, drinking establishment. But before that at 4pm we will be broadcasting a Mike Nesmith special on ResonanceFM.

Today at 4pm we have an unusual radio show in light of the recent Michael Nesmith live shows, his first UK solo gigs in over 30 years in fact and so we shall be broadcasting a unique tribute to the great man.

Bonanza & Son have decided to focus on one of his lesser known and criminally overlooked solo LPs that is ‘The Prison' LP from 1974.

A concept album which in 1974 came in a box with a large format book intended for the listener to read and contemplate the illustrations and that, my friends, is exactly what we shall be doing live on air…

… We shall be playing the LP in its entirety, with all the breaks, just as 'Papa Nez' intended whilst reading from the text. The original idea being that as one reads the book and looks at the illustrations whilst listening to the LP one frees oneself and the protagonist from the prison of the mind!!! FAR OUT MAN!

This is going to be a first for radio and a truly unique experience.

Thursday 25th October 2012

Countrier Than Thou 5th Birthday Party @ The Lock Tavern

Live acts:

The Burning Condors:
With a brand new single released only last week The Burning Condors have been very busy of late putting the finishing touches to their eagerly awaited debut album as well as radio appearances galore and key showcase gigs. The single 'Honey Trap’ is a sleazy, dirty piece of 'surefire hit’ Rock ’N’ Roll and Americana. If that wasn’t enough it also features a Bonanza & Son hero in the shape of ace harmonica player and frontman extraordinaire JD Wilkes of 'The Legendary Shack Shakers’ and ’The Dirt Daubers’. JD is a massive fan of The Condors and has taken them under his wing giving them support slots, American festival shows and production help, the stamp of approval indeed from our favourite ‘Kentucky Colonel’.

The Burning Condors have been developing their Rock 'n' Roll 'chops’ and are guaranteed to rip the roof off our 5th birthday party tonight and are the perfect Rock ’N’ Roll icing on the cake.
www.facebook.com/pages/Burning-Condors/169413266408723

+ Hymn For Her:
Lucy Tight & Wayne Waxing are 'Hymn For Her', a band that hails from anywhere and everywhere in the good ol’ US of A or rather wherever they can feasibly park their Airstream trailer...

These guys are the 'real McCoy’ for sure, utilising traditional Country & Americana instruments, narrative themes and song structures whilst fusing it with a ferociously amplified and distorted electric sound that wouldn’t be out of place on a Butthole Surfers album as produced by 'Mellow Gold' era Beck on Johnny Cash's home porta-studio.

Their new release, ‘Lucy & Wayne and THE AM’AIR’ICAN STREAM’ was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S tour. They stopped at various camp-grounds and friends driveways between shows, set up their gear in their Bambi/home recording studio, rolled ‘real’ reel tape and rocked out. Armed with a bullet mic, a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box, banjo, bass drum, hi-hat, and harp, this ‘lil duo causes massive earthquakes, tsunamis and twisters wherever they play. This is gonna rock and The Burning Condors will be lucky if there is still a roof left on the building for them to tear off!

+ The Kilcawley Family:
A welcome return from our favourite Brother & Sister duo and anachronistic, Americana aficionados, The Kilcawley Family. These simmering, siblings have also been incredibly busy travelling the length and breadth of the country busking, gigging, wowing everyone from 'Ballooned up’ posh kids at obscure, boutique festivals, families day-tripping in Morecombe to record company executives in London. They now have management and representation since they last graced the Countrier Than Thou stage, as well as having been busy, beavering away in various recording studios up and down the country. They’re on fire at the moment with a brand new batch of songs and are nothing less than an Avant-Garde-Hillbilly phenomena. Theirs is an authentic, pre-war, Country sound with a Gothic edge in the vein of The Carter Family or Jimmy Rogers on a Bonnie & Clyde collision course with Vampira and The Adams Family with the best dress sense in town… All of this with rockets from both the crypt and the tombs up their collective jacksies!
Simply put we have missed them dearly and can’t wait to see them jump out of our 5th birthday cake with autoharp and acoustic guitars in hand!

Bonanza & Son interestingly freaky fact No. 962:

Billy Swan had the job of Janitor at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville in the mid 60’s which he subsequently passed on to Kris Kristofferson… Even freakier is the fact that during the final week of Billy Swan's two week notice Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde sessions began and Kristofferson’s first week on the job was the 2nd week of said sessions…

Why couldn’t my first job have been a shitty job like that?

By the way check out this video for Swan's very interesting cut of the Elvis hit as the more eagle-eyed of you might spot some interesting characters in his backing band including a high flying Byrd on lead, acoustic guitar as well as a very unlikely English drummer and keyboard player!

Bonanza & Son First Song/Thought of The Day

‘True wisdom comes to each of us when we realise how little we understand about life, ourselves and the world around us’…
Socrates.

Vernon Dalhart-The Prisoner’s Song’

This song was a smash hit for the kids in its day!

… It became a national success as part of a double-sided single (Wreck Of The Old 97) selling more than seven million copies which was unprecedented for a mid-1920s recording and it was the best-selling single of all time, up to that time.

Bonanza & Son 'Song of The Day’:

Bonanza & Son 'Song of The Day'…

Some Of Shelley’s Blues-The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

A sterling cover of Michael Nesmith’s classic originally written in 1968 during The Monkees Nashville Sessions but was never released at the time in that incarnation. Nesmith later recorded it for his 1974 ’Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash’…

… The Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands version appeared on their 1970 LP ‘Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy’ which also included a cover of the Michael Nesmith penned track ‘Propinquity'…

We chose this in light of The Nez' upcoming UK, solo, mini tour.

Josh Harty Live sesssion:
Harty is a messenger, a North Dakota songsmith whose lyrics fill the dark spots between the lines of our lives. Nowhere is his latest album and if the disc's reception and his performance of the new material in the United Kingdom are signs, Harty is poised to go a long, long way.

"A work of extreme intensity" reports the Lonestar Times of Italy, "with beautiful voice, warm and strong."
“The new songs are brave, and alarming. ‘Whiskey and Morphine’ is both a caution and a taunt of temptations. The album’s title track, “Nowhere,” makes that word a destination to be feared, a place only hope will keep away.”-Fearless Radio

It doesn't get more Americana than Josh Harty. His father, both a preacher and the Police Chief of his boyhood small town, was also Harty's music mentor. "I was either going to jail, or to hell," Harty muses. That kind of humor, that hell-bound hope, is in the center of Harty's music. Music captured on the new disc, polished in performance in America, and now ready for another UK tour in support of Nowhere.

Preview of new Kristofferson LP

TODAY you can hear a preview of Kris Kristofferson’s as yet unreleased LP ‘Feeling Mortal’ on the repeat of our radio show, Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM at 1pm… 'Perfect with a Sunday roast’.

Released 5th November 2012; every track on Kristofferson’s new LP is a killer with a more upbeat, augmented sound than his two previous, stripped-down-bare-bones LPs 'This Old Road' from 2006 & 'Closer to the Bone’ from 2009.

With 'Feeling Mortal’ Kristofferson has utilised pedal steel and fiddles plus full-on, pounding Country on stand-out tracks like ‘Bread For The Body’ and ’Stairway To The Bottom’.

We reckon it’s his best album in almost 40 years perhaps since Border Lord from 1972.

As always we will be tracing the roots and subsequent influence of the pioneers, innovators, outlaws, renegades and mavericks of Country Music and Americana’s past present and future…
+ live atcs
+ featurettes 'Country Birthdays’ for Marty Stuart…

… and ‘Celluloid-Country’ where we look at the soundtrack to John Carpenter's ‘Dark Star’ in particular the song ‘Benson, Arizona’ as sung by John Yager, music written by John Carpenter and lyrics by Bill Taylor.

+ Competitions, album and gig ticket giveaways.
