The week ahead including The Handsome Family...

Howdy Folks,
We hope this update finds you fully rested after your Bank holiday.

It’s another busy and exciting week ahead for Bonanza & Son and we sincerely hope you will join us in this.

On Wednesday evening we are honoured and excited to be DJing with The Handsome Family at The Islington Assembly Hall. This is gonna be a terrific gig. The Handsome Family’s new LP ‘Wilderness’ is arguably the best of their career which is no mean feat as it is their tenth studio album from an illustrious career.

Support will be from the enchanting SnowApple and we should add that The Islington Assembly Hall is a truly stunning venue and one of our favourites in London.

Earlier that day at 4:30pm we will of course be broadcasting our Resonance 104.4fm radio show which will include the rest of our live session and interview with Josh Rouse plus an exclusive and brand new song from Bloodshot records' Ha Ha Tonka. Tune in on 104.4FM in London or www.resonancefm.com

On Thursday it’s our long running, monthly night ‘Countrier Than Thou’ at The Lock Tavern when we will have a very welcome return from SOCIETY + The Ramshackle Union Band as well as a guest DJ set from ace blogger, pod caster and all-round music aficionado and music obsessive Rob Morgan (If There Is Hell Below)... Full details below.

On Saturday evening we are DJing at The Lauriston Pub, 162 Victoria Park Rd, London, E9 7JN with a varied Rock ’N’ Roll set from 9pm-12:30am.

Finally on Sunday we are back at The Three Crowns on Stoke Newington Church St. N16 with a laid-back Sunday set of Film Soundtracks, Psych’, Country and Americana from 6-11pm

Have a splendid week and we hope to see you at one of this week's events,
Bonanza & Son.

Live acts:

Society:
A welcome return to The Lock Tavern stage for our favourite three-piece, Country-Rock band from the deep south of Sussex who excel in sumptuous, three-part harmonies that set them apart from their peers in an already fertile crop of Americana & Country Rock ‘up and comers' in the UK.

The bands sound has echoes of C.S.N.Y, The Band, The Heartbreakers, The Jayhawks, Wilco ,The Rolling Stones and The Faces as well as an original, core sound which has secured them live slots at The Maverick Festival as well as rave responses and play-listing from BOB HARRIS on his BBC RADIO shows.

Society's assuredness has secured them support slots with established Americana acts including Eve Selis, Deadstring Brothers, Corb Lund, Luke Doucet and The Wailin’ Jennys as well as two tours of duty in Canada alonside a string of dates in the American Mid-West as well as a BBC Radio2 live session on The Bob Harris show no less.

Here at Bonanza & Son we suspect the Society lads have a bright future ahead of them on the 'not-too-distant’ horizon.

Josh Rouse live on Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM

Bonanza & Son On ResonanceFM
Wednesday 22nd May 2013... 4:30pm

Bonanza & Son are both honoured and incredibly excited to have Josh Rouse live in session on Wednesday 22nd May 2013:

It may have been 15+ years from roots in rural Nebraska, through time in ‘Music City’ Nashville, TN and to the current day relocated to a new home in cosmopolitan Spain but it seems that the song spirits have been constant companions for Josh Rouse. Perhaps no more so than on the singer-songwriter’s latest record, The Happiness Waltz, an album that marries both his past, present and perhaps future. He revisits an earlier era, where his music was heavily influenced by the ‘soft rock’ of the 70’s, combining it with lyrical tales drawn from the here and now of his modern day-to-day life which is deeply enriched by his children and family.

Rouse has been lauded for his special talents – creating little slices of heaven with words and music that have captured the hearts and minds of both critics and fans the globe over. Whether it is the New York Times talking about his 'Pop-Folk introspection', Filter lauding the “wide-eyed ‘thank you, ma’am’ songs that could have grated in their earnest angle if they weren’t so damn wonderfully executed” or Uncut raving about the music as 'warm, molten gold; a long bath in the serenity of well-gauged bittersweet balladry' and proclaiming him 'a talent to outrank Ryan Adams or Conor Oberst.’
Over a storied career, from the engaging debut 'Dressed Like Nebraska', through his ‘golden era’ with ‘1972' and ‘Nashville', right down to the 2011 Latin Bossa Nova-tinged LP, ‘Josh Rouse And The Long Vacations', Rouse has created a series of unique, and distinctive records, filled with sparkling melodies and enchanting lyrics.

And there is no disputing that his most recent, 'The Happiness Waltz’, again proves that he stands apart from the crowd, producing yet another set of delicate, intelligent, nuanced pop songs, all destined to become fast favorites. An album of twelve radiant new tunes, from the upbeat “This Movie’s Way Too Long” to the jangle-fest that is 'Simple Pleasures', a cohesive whole that will gain and please fans both old and new.

“Songwriting for me is something I have to do to stay on the sunny side of life. It’s my therapy. I pick up a guitar from time to time and it spills out. I feel lucky in that, after years of being blessed by their presence, the song spirits are still moving through me”… Josh Rouse

Latest Bonanza & Son radio show

We’ve just uploaded yesterdays radio show which included not one but two sterling live sessions:

One of our favourite Bloodshot Records signings 'Ha Ha Tonka’ all the way from Springfield, Missouri via California, New York and Kansas no less. The boys came by the studio and put in one of the best performances yet including an exclusive brand new song.

+ Del Barber... To say this man is talented would be a massive understatement when looking at his prolific work as both a musician, song-writer and producer. This is all the more impressive when one considers, Winnipeg born, Barber was nominated for a 2011 Juno Award for his 'Love Songs of the Last Twenty’ LP. Del also won two Western Canadian Music Awards for 'Independent Album of the Year' and 'Roots Solo Recording of the Year’.

Del Barber live session:

Del releases his third and most accomplished album of Americana and Alt-Country to date. To say this man is talented would be a massive understatement when looking at his prolific work as both a musician, song-writer and producer. This is all the more impressive when one considers Barber was nominated for a 2011 Juno Award for his 'Love Songs of the Last Twenty’ LP. Del also won two Western Canadian Music Awards for 'Independent Album of the Year' and 'Roots Solo Recording of the Year'.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada but a well weathered traveller who makes Jack Kerouac look like a bedroom-dwelling wall flower, Barber has travelled the length and breadth of Canada and the USA on his own, personal road movie collecting song ideas along the way and creating a deep depth of narrative and cinematic imagery within his compositions. The results are beautiful yet gritty balladry that leave dusty footprints in the mind and traces of Country-Folk traditions of the late, greats of classic, Americana songwriters. The latest album picks up the trail with a set prairie parables, finely, crafted confessionals and twang-kissed, tongue-tales of desires lived, left and lost.

It is with deep sadness that Bonanza & Son have to announce yet another London, music venue bites the dust. At the end of May Filthy MacNasty’s closes its doors forevermore.

For almost three years Bonanza & Son has been proud to put on live events at one of London’s most legendary pub venues. We have hosted Battle Of The One Man Bands at our Day Of The Dead Night, shown films by internationally renowned artists at our ‘Gaslight Club’ as well as numerous book readings, Film nights and hundreds of rocking DJ sets…

It hasn’t always been an easy road; we’ve had our nights closed-down and clamped-down by the council, the police and psychotic, local residents but we definitely have some very happy memories of some truly ace gigs.

Please come and join us one last time this Thursday for Bonanza & Son’s 'Bon Voyage’ to Filthy MacNasty’s… We have live sets from both Dylan Walshe and The Kosmic Troubadour plus DJ’s til the early hours. Fun starts at 7pm and as always it is free entry.

And finally on Sunday 12th May we will be playing laid back tunes and film soundtracks at The Three Crowns on Stoke Newington Church St. from 7 till 11pm, Free Entry.

Hope to see you soon,
Bonanza & Son.

Bon(anza) Voyage…
A farewell to Filthy MacNasty’s this Thursday 9th May

Live acts:
The Kosmic Troubadour:
Travel on a magic-carpet journey through space and time with the Kosmic Troubadour. This piano-playing phenomena with his songs of passion and compassion is a true outsider and maverick in the same vein as Daniel Johnstone or Wild Man Fischer.

Imagine if Frank Zappa or Todd Rundgren had come out of the working mens clubs of the North of England or the neo-Psych of early Happy Mondays on a road trip to Peter Kay's 'Phoenix Night’s' via the Hacienda.
www.facebook.com/pages/Kosmic-Troubadour/389949381408

Dylan Walshe:
It’s always a pleasure for Bonanza & Son to present Irelands favourite, rising Son… He’s on fire at the moment having recently had support slots with Josh Rouse plus an extensive tour of Ireland. Dylan Walshe’s return to the Bonanza & Son stage is always more overdue than our unreturned, technically stolen library copies of Bob Dylan’s ‘Chronicles’ and Pete Seeger’s ‘Rise-Up Singing Folk Handbook’ from Islington Libraries and Museums!..
Add that to the alchemical process and it is also a more welcome return than even Vashti Bunyan’s after her 35 year hiatus between debut and sophomore Lps… Oh and you might also just be getting our Pacific Drift! ..Bonanza & Son’s favourite, tenacious, traveling, troubadour from the Emerald Isle will not disappoint!

+ More acts to be confirmed

+Bonanza & Son (ResonanceFM) DJ Set:
We’ll be playing across the board from our collection of wacked-out Psychedelia to Cosmic Country and way beyond...

We will also be screening the 1971, 'Electric Western' ‘Zachariah’ which was a major influence on Tarantino’s 'Django: Unchained’.

Todays radio show for your armchair listening pleasure...

I had two absolutely amazing live acts on my radio show today, massive THANKYOUs to Pete Roe & Amos Zimmerman…

Here’s the Soundcloud upload, listen at your leisure… Hope you enjoy it…

The show was dedicated to George Jones following his sad passing away this past week plus not one but two amazing live acts in the studio…

Pete Roe live session:
Pete Roe is an amazing new talent with one of the most interesting albums we’ve heard this year. Cutting his teeth as a studio member of Laura Marling’s band Pete has created an album that is as beautiful to the ears as it is to the eyes housed in an exquisite circular, Neo Art Nouveau hand printed case. It looks like a quirky Pandoras Box and the album has a similar aural effect, subtley drawing you in and consuming you with its siren-like charms. Obviously Pete’s guitar style owes a great debt to British Folk guitarists of the 60’s such as Bert Jansch and John Martyn but this is juxtaposed with an Americana feel and a nod to folks like Neil Young, Paul Simon and Ryan Adams. He also has a foot in the present having been in demand as support to such people as Mumford & sons, The Old Crowe Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe’s Magnetic Zeroes. The album launch will be perfectly placed in the beautiful surroundings of St Mark’s Church in trendy Dalston, London on Thursday 9th May 2013 but we have him first live in the studio today.
www.peteroe.org/home.cfm

Amos Zimmerman live session:
For several years now Amos Zimmerman has been contributing unique songwriting to the independant music scene in Israel, an uncompromising flower of originality in the muddy swamps of musical monotony. With songs perhaps paradoxically characterised by Americana hook-lines and Country Melodies, Zimmerman throws in Blues, Folk and Rock’n’Roll to his bare-boned, honest lyrics and brooding, sensitive melodies.
