'Countrier Than Thou’

@ The Lock Tavern
Thursday 25th July 2013

Live acts:

Dylan Walshe (SINGLE LAUNCH):
Bonanza & Son are more than proud to be hosting the single launch for Ireland’s most essential, rising Son Dylan Walshe and his, quite frankly, epic single ‘Blind Is Blind’ which has just been released on ltd edition, coloured vinyl by the ace German label Squoodge Records.

Dylan Walshe is a genuine talent stranded on a desert island of quality but refusing to be rescued by the ships of fools who endlessly sail around his Island of hidden treasure… He’s now laid solid foundations away from the sand and bit by bit he’s constructing his own castle. In a broad, Dublin brogue he sings loudly and proudly and rightly so’…

No mere free download for this rising Irish Son but a proper slab of 7 inch vinyl in three, collectible, limited edition colours...

Dylan Walshe is to our ears thee most promising artist on the London Americana scene; no aping of ‘Desire' era Dylan for him. Rather Walshe is fighting back with rousing vocals and a workman's blood, sweat and tears to produce craftsman-like, artisan quality. No wonder then one of Germany's foremost record labels where falling over themselves to release his songs and at this Thursday's Countrier Than Thou at The Lock Tavern it is the launch party.

Dylan is on fire at the moment having recently had support slots with Josh Rouse plus an extensive tour of Ireland, an appearance at The Muddy Roots Festival as well as upcoming dates in Berlin; there seems to be no stopping him.

Dylan Walshe’s return to the Bonanza & Son stage is always more overdue than our unreturned, technically stolen library copies of Bob Dylan’s ‘Chronicles’ and Pete Seeger’s ‘Rise-Up Singing Folk Handbook’ from Islington Libraries and Museums!..
Add that to the alchemical process and it is also a more welcome return than even Vashti Bunyan’s after her 35 year hiatus between debut and sophomore Lps and you just might also be getting our Pacific Drift! ..Bonanza & Son’s favourite, tenacious, traveling, troubadour from the Emerald Isle will not disappoint!

‘I love Dylan’s voice and the way he’s using it’… Christy Moore

Cheeseburger:
A very welcome return to Bonanza & Son's favourite, perverted purveyours of the most off-kilter and skewed Country songs this side of a David Lynch or Roberto Rodriguez movie. Cheeseburger portray filthy, Gothic-Country Noir tales that sound like they were recited to Johnny Cash by Link Wray whilst both struggle to beat the devil on a seven-day bender with a near-death Elvis!

A rag-taggle but nonetheless sterling line-up of musicians including the guitar maestro Garry of legendary vintage, Psychobilly band The Long Tall Texans, Cheeseburger are at once shambolic, beautifully tatty, bittersweet, slow and fast with the most twisted and awkward, lo-fi soundtracks from the greatest Westerns you've never seen and with mountains of songs about love 'n' hate, guilt ’n’ redemption, questions unanswered, memories ’n' loss.

These guys may possibly be the oddest but greatest band you ever see on The Lock Tavern stage. Ladies and Gentlemen let me introduce you to your new favourite band!

‘Dead Stars, Shining Lights’.

Here is the second in a new series of posters for ‘Countrier Than Thou’ entitled ‘Dead Stars, Shining Lights’.

The theme of the poster series centres around and pays homage to dead Country & Rock ’n’ Roll artists of the past and will act as source material for a larger series of more elaborate oil paintings to be exhibited at some time in the not to distant future.

The first poster featured Townes Van Zandt as we had Turnstile Junkpile playing live. This time we thought it only fitting to have the Burger King himself Elvis bearing in mind we have Cheeseburger playing live.

Todays 'Bonanza & Son Best Name In Rock':

And today’s Bonanza & Son award for ‘The Best Name In Rock' goes to Cecil ‘Butterball’ Harris, pedal steel player extraordinaire of Jimmie Heap and the Melody Masters... Not to be confused with Joseph ‘Butterball’ Tamburro, a Soul DJ on WDAS Philadelphia.

This track is the B-side of ‘It Takes A Heap Of Lovin' from 1956 but is quite unusual compared to their trademark Western Swing albeit some of the most progressive Western Swing you’re likely to hear… Amazing stuff.

Buddy Emmons Special on Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM

Buddy Emmons is arguably the world’s foremost pedal steel player and Bonanza & Son will be paying tribute to the great man with a Buddy Emmons special on our ResonanceFM radio show.

This will be on the run-up to Warner Music Nashville’s August release of the Buddy Emmons tribute album ’The Big E: A Salute To Steel Guitarist Buddy Emmons’. We will of course be playing tracks from this album over the coming weeks.

On New Years Eve 1978, as part of the band Redneck Jazz Explosion, Buddy Emmons played alongside another virtuoso guitarist Danny Gatton known simply as 'The Telemaster’. The band performed this now legendary gig at The Cellar Door in Washington D.C. The recording of which was subsequently released as the LP 'Redneck Jazz’… Here is some film footage from that amazing performance; what a New Years Eve Party that must have been...

Here is some fantastic footage of Buddy Emmons performing the hit single ‘Half A Mind (To Leave You)’ as part of Ernest Tubb & The Texas Troubadours and their first recorded song together after he joined the group in 1957. The song was an instant hit record and has become a Country standard...
