Bonanza & Son weekend...

Howdy Folks,
Well it’s another exhilaratingly busy week for Bonanza & Son...

That said we have taken a couple of weeks off from our ResonanceFM radio show to concentrate on a number of new projects including a brand new venture at The Earl Derby on Kilburn High Road...

We are very excited to announce that Bonanza & Son will now be running the events diary at the venue; booking bands as well as djs and generally taking care of all events at The Earl Derby so watch this space for more details including our brand new club night ‘NASHVILLE SKYLINE’ next week and going forward always the first Thursday of the month.

We will be relaunching the radio show in a couple of weeks time on Wednesday 18th June with a live session and interview from The Drive-By Truckers no less! Woooo hooooo! We also have many more exciting live sessions scheduled over the coming weeks & months including The Felice Brothers, Daniel Romano, The Delines and many more so watch this space for full details.

Ok, well back to this week and tonight, Thursday 29th May, it is time once again for our long-running and successful club night ‘Countrier Than Thou’ at The Lock Tavern in Camden. Tonight we have a welcome return of our favourite ragtime, 9 piece string band The Elasticated Waste Band with their quirky, Neo-Bluegrass Americana. On the bill we also have the very talented Megan O’Neill and her band performing their perfectly crafted Country Pop and Folk...

Grifter Kid And The Midnight Raiders new LP is both a consummate and intriguingly quirky collection of laid back, louche sounds. Lounging elegantly with just the right amount of sunny, Sunday Swing... It’s the sounds of real romance but with an unexpected knife edge in tow!
Also on the bill is Boss Caine fresh from their UK support slot with Tony Joe White.
Arrive early, fun starts at 6pm sharp.

A bit of Neil Young to start the short week...

'Wake up it’s a Tuesday morning!’

'Last Dance’ taken from Neil Young’s ill-fated but nonetheless magnificent 'Time Fades Away' live LP from 1973 (that year again eh?).

Criminally the album has never seen an official re-release or re-master. This track, the highlight of the album for me, features Graham Nash and David Crosby on backing vocals with Crosby also playing rhythm guitar and Jack Nitzsche on piano.

Neil was very unhappy with the tour that spawned the album. Danny Whitten was 'sent home’ because he was unfit to play such a gruelling tour (65 shows in 90 days and Young’s biggest ever tour!). Whitten was unfit due to his drug addiction and subsequently died of a heroin overdose.

It’s probably fair to say that the sound of the LP is a matter of taste. Personally I think the vinyl sounds awesome; really gritty and dirty and stands up next to anything Young did with Crazyhorse for sonic ferocity. Another problem as far as re-releases go lies in the fact that there are no master tapes to speak of....

'Time Fades Away' was recorded directly from the sound man’s soundboard to 16-track. There were no 2 track masters ever made of this record. The master discs were cut directly from the 16 track masters and the mix discarded. Because no two-track stereo master tape was ever made, as would commonly be done, the album cannot be remastered in a traditional manner. If any new release was to be attempted a new mix would need to be made from the original multitrack tapes.

I guess Neil being the old goat that he is just can't be bothered. I also have a theory that he is perhaps haunted by a few demons from that ill-fated 1973 tour and is worried he may unearth a few ghosts that he’d rather leave undisturbed! He must have wondered at the time whether Danny Whitten being 'sent home’ had a contributing factor to his ultimate demise. It certainly didn’t save him if that was the desired effect.

Anyway regardless of whether an official remaster will ever see the light of day you could always just buy an old copy on vinyl of course!.. My copy sounds awesome! I can see right now a 1st pressing copy on e-bay with a start price of 99pence... So get involved!

Last night’s Bonanza & Son DJ set...

We’ve had a lot of requests to post our DJ set-list from last night’s sold-out Handsome Family gig at the 100 Club so here is a tracklist...

We are currently compiling a special mix with some of the selections plus a few additions... Watch this space for more info.

In the meantime someone has compiled a Spotify playlist based on our DJ set from last night... Just click or copy this URL... https://play.spotify.com/user/dan_a/playlist/6HMLDkXCGYnM2E7owN7h8d

There are a couple of omissions which aren’t on Spotify which we will include in our upcoming Mixcloud mix...

The Jonathan Wilson song ‘Carousel' is a super rare track from his privately released album 'Frankie Ray' from 2005. Currently residing on Discogs and E-bay and not leaving much change from 200 quid for the CD so I doubt that will ever appear on Spotify but I will include it on the mix...

The Mickey Newbury track 'T Total Tommy’ is taken from Mickey’s 1969 LP ‘Looks Like Rain’ again sadly not on Spotify.

The Sturgill Simpson track ‘It Ain’t All Flowers’ is taken from his newly released LP ‘Metamodern Sounds In Country Music’ so I guess that will be on Spotify imminently and the John Fullbright track ‘Happy’ is taken from his as yet unreleased LP ’Songs’ due out at the end of May.

Finally It is worth pointing out that there are two slightly different versions of other songs. The Bert Jansch is a live version and not the version we normally play. We play the one from Bert's 'LA Turnaround' LP from 1974 which features Michael Nesmith and his pedal steel player Orville Red Rhodes hence us following the track with a Michael Nesmith song. The 'LA Turnaround' version has now been added at the end of the Spotify playlist.

The North Mississppi Allstars track is the original version from their 2013 album 'World Boogie Is Coming’ whereas last night we played their upcoming new single which is a remix by Mario Caldato...

Just click the link below to hear the full Spotify playlist...

Happy listening, many thanks to Dan and watch out for our full Mixcloud Mix coming soon...
