Dylan Carlson's Earth on Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM Wed 11th March 2015

Exclusive live session from Dylan Carlson & Earth including never-before-heard new track on today's broadcast...

Bonanza & Son on ResonanceFM
Wednesday 11th March 2015 4:30pm (UK Time)

Bonanza & Son are very excited to have Dylan Carlson & Earth performing a live session and interview recorded during Earth's recent UK leg of their world tour...

Earth:
From their formation in 1989 Seattle based Earth have made steady and sturdy advances with their unique musical vision. Led by guitarist Dylan Carlson, Earth's music is predominantly instrumental though not exclusively and can be divided into two distinct stages. Their early work is characterized by distortion, droning minimalism and lengthy, repetitive song structures. The band's subsequent output reduces the distortion while incorporating elements of Country and Folk but with a truly unique result.

Earth is recognized as a pioneer of drone metal with Dylan being almost single handedly responsible for devising this sub genre. The band's Earth 2 is now regarded as a milestone of the genre.

Feedback and distorted guitars were the blueprint for what Dylan at the time coined 'ambient metal' but this has increasingly given way to a more 'melodic' approach.

Their most recent and easily most commercially successful album 'Primitive And Deadly' has seen Dylan wear his heart and influences on his guitar strap with a nod to his teenage, Heavy Metal heroes and three of the songs include vocals including a guest spot from one Mark Lanegan no less. The album out-sold the entire Earth back catalogue in the first week of release and this live session on Bonanza & Son was recorded on the eve of their sold out show at the 800 capacity Islington Assembly Hall, London as part of a successful world tour which went as far afield as Moscow and Japan.

Also worth noting is the fact that Dylan Carlson was a close friend of Kurt Cobain having been in bands together back in the day.

'Too Folk for the Country crowd and too Country for the Folkies!' The Music of Kate Wolf

It is an absolute travesty that Kate Wolf is not better known or recognised in the UK for the talent that she was… EPIC songwriting that really should be talked about and up there with the likes of Townes Van Zandt or Gram Parsons...

Her life story was also equally as tragic as the aforementioned boys own favourites if not more so in fact albeit in a different context having died at the age of only 44 following a long and harrowing battle with Leukemia…

As well as an exceptional songwriter Kate was a family woman, bar singer, Country Music DJ and music festival programmer.

'Oklahoma Going Home' is taken from her debut LP 'Back Roads' by Kate Wolf & The Wildwood Flower which was pretty much recorded live with little or no overdubs over five days in front of an open fire in a cabin on the North Coast of Sonomo County, California in 1976

Kate released six fine albums whilst she was alive with numerous albums released posthumously.

Back Roads (1976) (billed as Kate Wolf and the Wildwood Flower)
Lines on the Paper (1977)
Safe at Anchor (1979)
Close to You (1980)
Give Yourself to Love (1982)
Poet's Heart (1985)

Gold in California – A Retrospective of Recordings (1986)
The Wind Blows Wild (1988)
An Evening in Austin (1988)
Looking Back at You (1994)
Carry It On (1996)
Weaver of Visions – The Kate Wolf Anthology (2000)

Every year at the Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville California there is a festival to commemorate and celebrate the music of Kate Wolf> This year's event will be the 20th Festival and promises to be amazing. possibly the best yet with acts including Steve Earle, Iron & Wine, Judy Collins and Smokey Robinson plus many more acts and events including:
•Four stages of Music on 150 acres
•Beautiful On Site Camping In Old Growth Oak Trees
•Workshops
•Kids' Area
•Hatha Yoga & Tai-Chi
•Music Jamming Area
•Flowing creek
•Hobo Jungle

Kate Wolf was born Kathryn Louise Allen on 27th January 1942 in San Francisco and died 10th December 1986 in Goodyears California.

Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and James McMurty's new LP etc...

Last weekend Bonanza & Son decided to revisit the award-winning, American televised, Western miniseries ‘Lonesome Dove’ originally broadcast by CBS in February 1989…

Lonesome Dove starred Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, Angelica Houston, Danny Glover, Robert Urich with many more notable actors and performances…

On this viewing we were particularly touched by the epic, perfectly emotive score as composed and conducted by Basil Poledouris and so subsequently included a track on this week's Bonanza & Son radio show on ResonanceFM.

Widely considered the creative apex of television scoring, Basil Poledouris' sweeping Lonesome Dove soundtrack is arguably the most compelling and effective orchestral music ever written for the small screen... It's also been described as the best Western score to appear in any medium in the last quarter century with an eloquence and slap-leather authenticity all its own. Poledouris' beautifully poignant score captures the fading grandeur of the American West in vivid detail whilst its panoramic arrangements evoke the wide-open spaces of a land not yet overrun by highways, skyscrapers and strip malls... Poledouris is most effective when exploring the rugged yet tender character of the men and women who made the frontier their own.

Lonesome Dove was based on Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. Larry’s son James McMurtry also starred in Lonesome Dove. The perfect and happy symmetry is that Larry has just released a fine LP 'Complicated Game' which we also featured on the show.

Larry McMurtry's original idea for Lonesome Dove was not in actual fact a novel at all but a feature film way back in 1972 entitled 'The Streets of Laredo'. It was originally intended that Peter Bogdanovich would direct the movie and that it would star James Stewart, John Wayne and Henry Fonda. Unfortunately the plans fell through when Wayne turned down the role which lead Jimmy Stewart to back out also and the project was subsequently shelved. Ten years later McMurtry resurrected the screenplay as his full-length novel and the rest is history.
